Think Bigger With Silver

Updated: Jul 2, 2024

Silver is the most precious metal that can be used to make some metal pieces, jeweler and industrial parts. Silver plating has been a concept which has been going on for ages. Once it was used as a status symbol and a way to show off wealth, but now it has gained even more popularity through proving its worth in industrial use. Silver has the highest thermal and electrical conductivity and reflective properties compared to any other metal on the face of this Earth. So, people can use the silver plating on their industrial parts to protect such parts from any electromagnetic wave.

There Are Various Types Of Silver Plating, Some Of Them Are:

1. Technical Plating: As stated before silver has the highest electric conductivity out of all the other metals, thus it is great for technical plating. Silver also enables the conductor to have great solderability characteristics. Silver plating helps improve the wire’s high frequency transmission characteristics.

2. Decorative Plating: This kind of plating is mainly done to enhance external appearance. It is mainly done to decorate surfaces and people can also use such silver plating to decorate their house. A passive layer may be used on the silver layer so that the silver doesn’t get tarnished easily. Such plating is usually used for jewelry, show pieces, memorabilia, instruments, and other such decorative items.

3. Partial Plating: It used for purposes where only a certain amount of the object needs to be plated. This might be required for both technical and decorative purposes. You can use the partial silver plating to protect your valuable things such as antique brass materials.

4. Restoration: This type of plating is used for restoring old metals items, be it silver or not. Plating old metal items with silver not only strengthen them but also increase their aesthetic appeal.

Silver Plating vs. Tin Plating:

One might be confused tin plating and silver since tin is cheaper, but silver has a lot more features to provide when compared to tin, which makes silver absolutely worth it. Silver has a way higher conductivity when compared to tin, also silver is more resistant to corrosion. Tin melts much faster when compared to silver. Lastly, silver alloys are much stronger than tin alloys. So you can use such silver plating for your home improvement and you can also use such plating on your industrial machines. But silver plating is quite expensive and tint plating can be cheaper than pure silver plating.

How To Maintain Silver Plated Objects?

After silver plating, the objects can be treated with chromates, lacquers, and other such organic and inorganic coatings. It should be kept in mind that silver gets tarnished by sulphur and acidic contents, thus silver-plated objects should be kept in contact with non-sulphur bearing papers, bags and desiccates. Apart from that, you must clean such silver pieces occasionally and if you find any damages on your silver plating then you can hire trained professionals to repair or restore the same.

Points To Remember Before Applying Silver Plating:

Before plating anything with silver one should make sure that the material being coated is free of cracks, pits, tensile stress, metal or non-metal impurities and other such things. If not taken care of properly, these things can lead to adhesion problems and cause voids in the plating. No other treatment on the metal should be done after the electroplating has been done.

Silver plating has the highest demand among any other type of plating in the industry. Silver is actively used in semi-conductors, bearings, batteries, solar panels, connectors and many other such sectors of the industry.
